A mini guide to Almeria
Almeria lies on the Eastern coast of Andalusia by the Mediterranean Sea. Throughout the centuries and due to its fine location, Almerias business centre and port was invaded by Carthaginian and Phoenician tribes first, to finally get conquered by the Arabs and the Romans. The Moorish Alcazaba, a former fortress built to protect Almerias inhabitants from the enemy, is considered to be one of the most important relics in Europe.
One of the main agricultural producers in Europe, Almeria is currently well-known for its beaches and, consequently, numerous high quality resorts have been erected on its coasts to welcome tourists, especially at Almerimar and Aguadulce.
Nature and adventure lovers will be delighted to know that Almeria is home to the breathtaking volcanic-origin Cabo de Gata-Nijar natural park. If this should not be enough, visitors might also like to experience a stay in the city centre as it is a true hot spot in itself. Walking along its main avenue La Rambla, literally dotted with shops and restaurants of every kind will give the tourist a chance to meet Andalusias friendly people and mouthwatering gastronomy. On the other hand, discovering the historic sites that the Old Quarter has to offer- principally the Cathedral of Almeria, the church of Santiago or the Cervantes Theatre- will no doubt prove to be an unforgettable experience.
